Fencing

Gates with First Fence of Idaho

A gate is the part of a fence that does the most work, and it's usually the first thing to sag, drag or stop latching. Most gate problems come down to posts that shift, frames that aren't braced, or hinges and latches too light for the weight they carry.

Whether it's a single walk gate to the back yard or a wide double gate for a trailer or RV, a gate holds up when it hangs on solid, deeply set posts, with a braced frame and hardware sized for its width and weight. New gates are built to match the fence, and existing gates can often be rebuilt or re-hung.

FAQ

Gates: common questions

Why does my gate sag?

Usually because the hinge post has leaned, the frame has racked out of square, or the hinges are too small. An anti-sag cable can help a wood gate, but a leaning post has to be reset or replaced to fix the problem for good.

How wide should a gate be?

A walk gate around 4 ft wide fits a mower or wheelbarrow comfortably. For vehicles, trailers or RVs, double drive gates of 10 to 12 ft or more are common; measure your widest vehicle and add room to maneuver.

Can a gate be added to my existing fence?

In most cases, yes. A section of fence is removed, new gate posts are set to carry the weight, and the gate is built to match the rest of the fence.
